Over the past few decades, advances in cutting edge technology have made biology one of the most exciting fields to enter. Preparing your child to pursue their passion for biology with the tools, mentors, and proper learning environment they need to succeed is one of the greatest gifts you can offer as a parent.

The Ardent Biology and Biology Olympiad Program is designed for students interested in life sciences and medicine. It’s purpose is to build their knowledge base of the biological sciences early so they can explore a medical profession, pursue academic research, and participate in USA Biology Olympiad Competitions.

Why Study Biology at Ardent?

The Ardent Biology Olympiad Program has four primary objectives:

  • Develop A Passion For Biological Science: The future of biology depends on students who have a deep interest in the subject and the knowledge to pursue it effectively. These students will need interdisciplinary technical knowledge as well as leadership skills, the ability to collaborate well with others, and the space to discover their talents and passions. We provide an environment that offers all of these unique facets of education, preparing students to pursue research in fields ranging from microbiology to biomathematics.
  • Achieve Academic Success: Our first objective is to help students taking Honors Biology or AP Biology to succeed academically and prepare for the SAT II Biology or AP Biology exam. To achieve this end we’ve built an exam preparation program we offer each spring that includes hands-on coaching, critical thinking opportunities, and intellectually stimulating activities.
  • Showcase Talents in Biology Competitions: We help students who have accelerated their biology studies showcase their talent through biology-related competitions such as the Science Olympiad and the USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) competitions. Materials, exercises, and concepts from both the Science Olympiad and the USA Biology Olympiad exams have been integrated into our curriculum to achieve maximum synergy in learning.
  • Prepare for Success in College: Most colleges accept a score of 4 (some require 5) on the AP Biology exam as college credit so passing this exam can help your child advance more quickly in college. In addition, participation in competitions like the Science Olympiad or the USABO is acknowledged as a sign of future success by elite colleges and universities.

SAT II Biology and AP Biology Exam

Students choose to take the SAT II Biology Exam of the AP Biology Exam because performing well gives them an edge when applying to prestigious summer programs, taking upper division college classes, or pursuing advanced research in life sciences or medicine. High school classes such as Honors Biology or AP Biology will help your student do well on these tests, but self-study is also an option. We provide many programs at the Ardent Academy to help your child prepare for and adapt to the new changes in the AP and SAT Biology exams.

USA Biology Olympiad (USABO) Competitions

The USABO selection process has three main phases. Each phase includes a separate exam that challenges students and their understanding of high school level biology concepts. The first exam is open to all biology students at registered schools throughout the United States. It is 50 minutes long and has only multiple-choice questions. The top 10% of students who take the exam will be admitted into the semi-finals, where they will take a more challenging test comprised of multiple choice, short answer, and free response questions.

The top 20 scorers in the semi-finals will be given the opportunity to visit Purdue University for two weeks of practical and theoretical tutorials. They will then take the National Finals exam that requires an understanding of all the knowledge they have learned up to that point. Four winners will then be selected to attend the International Biology Olympiad, where they will compete against students from over 60 countries from around the world!

B110 - Experimental Biology

Grades: 6 - 8

Length: Ten 3-hour lessons overed over two weeks during the summer sessioin.

Description: Experimental Biology promotes curiosity and ingenuity, and will provide a foundational understanding of basic biological principles, laboratory techniques, and scientific writing. This experience will foster an understanding of the methods of scientific investigation and further develop scientific minds. Through this course students will be expected to plan and perform experiments, read the biology text independently, write formal laboratory reports, analyze data and account for errors in the lab, and complete a presentation that will include their understanding of investigation and showcase their ability to embed formal scientific thoughts and vocabulary into explanations.

B210 - Honor Biology and Biology Olympiad 1

Grades: 10 - 12

Length: This is a 30-week program starts in the fall session.

Description: The Introductory Biology Olympiad is geared at providing students with a biological foundation that will set the stage for success in the USA Biology Olympiad Competition and the Advanced Placement Biology Exam. This fast-paced two-week course will cover foundational knowledge of the eight major themes that drive instruction in advanced biology courses: Science as a Process, Evolution, Energy Transfer, Continuity and Change, Relationship of Structure to Function, Regulation, Interdependence in Nature, and Science, Technology and Society. To help students adopt to the new changes in the AP Biology exam and prepare them to achieve success in school biology classes, embedded in the course will be opportunities for students to apply knowledge and fine tune scientific writing skills through laboratory investigation.

B220 - AP Biology and Biology Olympiad 2

Length: This is a 30-week program starts in the fall session.

Description: The Intermediate Biology Olympiad is geared at preparing students to take the USA Biology Olympiad Open Exam and AP Biology Exam. During the first 20 weeks, students will learn all the topics covered on the USA Biology Olympiad Open Exam and have weekly practice exam to improve their knowledge and skills. In the last 10 weeks, students will prepare for the AP Biology exam.

Length: This is a 30-week program starts in the fall session.

Description: For students who have completed AP Biology or were named a USA Biology Olympiad Semefinalist the previous year, Advanced Biology Olympiad is designed to prepare them to take the Semifinal Exam.
