The American Association of Physics Teachers (AAPT) just announced the winners of the 2008 U.S. Physics Team selection preliminary exam. 415 students qualified for the quarter-final exam. A little over 10% (49 students) of the winners are from the state of California. Among them are two students from the Ardent Academy Physics Olympiad Training Program:

by Alex Zivkovic, 7th grade, Vista Verde School. LOS ANGELES, Calif. Most people assume that when you're not at school, you do nothing academic besides your homework. However, if you were at the State Science Fair held at Los Angeles Memorial Sports Arena, you would think otherwise. Congregated in an old basketball stadium were 953 students representing 359 schools. Everyone was from all across California, and we were all locked in a competition for over $60,000 worth of prize money.

The American Mathematical Association announced its 2008 USAMO Qualifiers on April 8. California students accounted for 1/5 of the total number of qualifiers with 91 out of 500 qualifiers. 19 of the students are from Southern California counties.

However, in the case of the 328 fourth, fifth, and sixth graders taking part in the 17th Orange County Math Field Day Southern Section, those two words were not all that far-fetched.
