Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth (CTY) held its 2007 Academic Talent Search Awards Ceremony at California State Politechnic University Pomona in early June. The talent search was for Southern California elementary and middle school students who distinguished themselves through special testing as among the most academically gifted young students in the country.

The 2007 Southern California MATHCOUNTS was held at UC Irvine on March 17. 38 teams and 160 students participated in the event. Sixth grader Daichi Tsuna of Ridgecrest Intermediate School won first place and will represent California at the National MATHCOUNTS competition. He will be joined by three students from Northern California: Nathan Pinkser, Patrick Yang, and Albert Wu. David Tang-Quan of Ridgecrest won first place countdown and the first place team is Ridgecrest Intermediate School.
